Dino Melaye loses nephew in Kogi election violence

A nephew of Senator Dino Melaye has died after being shot at the lawmaker’s polling unit at Ayetoro ward 1 unit 004. Olorunjuwon was shot on Saturday when gunmen invaded the polling unit during election.

Melaye announced the death on Sunday morning via Twitter, saying his nephew’s death was for a just cause.
“My nephew Olorunjuwon who was shot at my pooling unit yesterday died this morning. My brother your death is a Supreme sacrifice in the struggle for the liberation of our people. Rest in peace aburo. So sad,” he said.

Melaye is contesting Kogi West senatorial seat with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Smart Adeyemi, as his major contender. Tensions have been high in Kogi as both camps of the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have accused each other of brewing trouble.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun collating the results.
